+ what is super 8 film?

super 8 is a motion picture film format developed by kodak in the 1960s. it's the most accessible format of real film that you can shoot on — cameras and film-stock are relatively cheap (especially compared to 35mm and 65mm), readily available and easy to use. nothing else looks like super 8 film

super 8 film doesn't record sound (anymore), so generally when you're filming you're filming, and when you're soundtracking, you're soundtracking. may seem obvious but it's nice to focus on one thing at a time in life sometimes (pun intended)

+ different types of super 8 film

most super 8 film available at the moment is made by kodak. and they have 5 films in production: 3 colour negative films (Vision3 50D, 200T, 500T), 1 colour reversal film (Ektachrome 100D) and one black-and-white reversal film (Tri-X - 200). and of course we can supply 250D colour negative Super 8 which is something of a rarety and excellent to use. only the colour negative films can be used for straight 8

+ what film can i use for straight 8 competitions?

for straight 8 competitions, ONLY colour negative super 8 film is eligible.

that means 50D, 200T, 250D, 500T ONLY. nothing else is accepted. no tri-x, no ektachrome, no mysterious 50s cartridge you found in your grandparents' attic.

and if do you accidentally shoot on the wrong film, no amount of grovelling will get that reel accepted: our lab doesn't even process other film types. you will be able to collect your unprocessed reel from the lab and, if you're within your delivery deadline, send another reel shot on an eligible film stock. no exceptions!

+ which film is best?

they're each good for different reasons. as a general rule - the lower the film speed number (50, 100, 200, 250, 500), the smaller the grain of the film and the sharper the footage looks, but the more light you need to shoot. click on any of the film stock images to get mroe info about each stock and see examples.
